STANFORD, Calif. / LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of New Mexico track & field team made great progress towards qualifying times in multiple events while competing at the Stanford Invitational and Texas Tech Masked Rider on Saturday.
For the NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the top-48 student-athletes from each event qualify for competition at preliminary round sites. From there, the top 12 competitors in each event advance to the national championships.
The Lobos had one student-athlete reach an early-season qualifying time and four more crack the top-100 of the qualifying list, making early progress towards those qualifying marks and times.
Tianna Holmes led the Lobos as she ran a time of 53.39 in the 400m dash, finding the No. 21 spot on the national qualifying list in the event.
Abbe Goldstein competed in the 800m run with a time of 2:07.66, which would currently put her at 21st on the qualifying list. Her results are still pending input into TFRRS to confirm where she officially stands on the list.
Mikyla Harkley broke the top-100 qualifying list with a mark of 12.13m/39’9.75” in triple jump.
In the men’s 4×400 relay, the quartet of Rivaldo Leacock, Jovahn Williamson, Victor Akhalu and Jevon O’Bryant ran a time of 3:09.80 to put them at 39th on the qualifying list. The top 24 relay teams will be accepted into preliminary rounds.
O’Bryant also cracked the top-100 in 200m dash as he ran a time of 21.05 for No. 72 on the qualifying list. In the 400m dash, Leacock ran a time of 47.80 for 94th on the qualifying list.
In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Awet Yohannes finished the event with the first place at Texas Tech, running a time of 9:07.08 for 61st on the qualifying list.
The Lobos will host their first home outdoor meet of the season on Thursday, April 7, as they welcome teams in for the UNM Spring Invite. The team will also be sending some women’s student-athletes to the Jo Meaker Classic from April 7-9 at West Texas A&M.
