Declan Rice has missed West Ham’s trip to Liverpool due to illness.

Newcastle leading
Brighton have had 66 per cent possession in the opening 30 minutes and yet find themselves 2-0 down to hosts Newcastle.
Goals from Ryan Fraser and Fabian Schar in the opening 14 minutes definitely shocked Graham Potter’s side.

Aston Villa take an early lead
A lovely turn by Ollie Watkins to allow him to open up his body and fire the ball into the top corner.
Southampton have held the ball more but Villa have been clinical in front of goal in the opening 20 minutes.

In case you missed it yesterday
Jurgen Klopp insists his energy levels will determine when he decides to quit management — but says his current plan is still to leave Liverpool when his contract expires in 2024.
The 54-year-old German coach has transformed the club’s fortunes during his Anfield reign. Last weekend he added the Carabao Cup to his Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and Premier League triumphs.
His resurgent Liverpool side are competing for an unprecedented quadruple this season as they remain in the hunt for more glory in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
However, Klopp isn’t contemplating the prospect of signing another extension. By the summer of 2024 he will have been in charge for nearly nine years and he has previously spoken about promising his family he would take a break at the end of his current deal.

Ralf Rangnick says he will help ‘abundant talent’ Marcus Rashford find form
Ralf Rangnick has hailed Marcus Rashford’s talent and insists he will help the Manchester United forward find form again.
United face Manchester City on Sunday looking to push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
They were held to a 0-0 draw against Watford last weekend despite having 22 shots at goal.
And Rashford, 24, has been out of form in front of goal, having scored just twice since October.

Everton’s season does not depend on Tottenham win
Frank Lampard has spoken about the importance of Everton’s trip to Tottenham on Sunday.
“Tottenham is a difficult match away from home. We haven’t been great away from home all season,” he said.
“Our season doesn’t rest on Tottenham on Monday night but we have to work hard to prepare to try to get results in this patch of the season, which will be crucial for us.
“It is important to remain calm and consistent and remain focused on the work and the players have done that and I hope we see the benefits.”

Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko: I would be in Ukraine if not for my family
Oleksandr Zinchenko has said he would be in Ukraine if it were not for his family.
The Manchester City full-back is one of the more prominent Ukraine internationals in the Premier League and captained his club in the FA Cup win over Peterborough in mid-week. Zinchenko also carried out his country’s flag ahead of that game.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to an outpouring of support across football, and there will be a further round of tributes paid ahead of this weekend’s games in the Premier League.

Concussion expert Dr Paul McCrory tenders resignation from CISG following plagiarism claims
The academic who has helped to shape concussion protocols in football, rugby union, NFL and many other contact sports has offered his resignation over allegations of plagiarism.
Dr Paul McCrory was chair of the Concussion in Sport Group (CISG), which is funded by governing bodies including the International Olympic Committee, FIFA and World Rugby.
Its findings are reported every four years in the Consensus Statement on Concussion In Sport, of which McCrory was the lead author. This document underpins the concussion guidelines and assessment protocols implemented by, among others, the Football Association and NFL.

Penalties are overpowered: this is the alternative
Statistically speaking, just about every penalty you’ve ever seen was a miscarriage of justice.
A corner kick has about a two per cent chance of leading to a goal. A penalty kick? 78 per cent. You don’t need a PhD in statistics to spot the problem here.
There’s a fairer, way more exciting way to do penalties than spot kicks from 12 yards out: the running 35-yard shootout.

Controversial Sydney Old Firm friendly in Rangers’ ‘best interest’ — Van Bronckhorst
Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has backed his club’s decision to face rivals Celtic in Australia during the November international break.
It was announced on Wednesday that Rangers and Celtic will meet in the Sydney Super Cup with the duo captialising on the mid-season break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Sections of Rangers’ support have criticised the club by claiming they have “alienated a significant portion of the supporter base” by competing in the first Old Firm derby played outside Scotland.

Abramovich: What does ‘assets frozen’ actually mean?
Initially, sanctions would not mean the confiscation of any assets. The intention instead would be to prevent a designated individual from transacting in any way, ensuring they cannot make or receive payments. They would be barred access to his or her accounts in a similar way to when someone forgets their PIN number, or enters the code erroneously a number of times. Any subsequent attempt to access the account prompts a “Please speak to your branch” message. This is essentially the same, just on a grander scale. All transactions would be blocked and frozen.
There are a few exceptions made, for things like the designated individual’s general living costs and legal fees. But, for the club, there would be potentially crippling knock-on effects. One expert in this field say the sanctions “hit the main target, but they cause a lot of collateral damage, however smart policy makers say they are”.
More below.
