ALPENA — The Association of Lifelong Learners has scheduled programs for this week.

Today

Recycling

Join ALL at 1:30 p.m. today for How Are We Doing With Recycling? This program will be held at M. Briggs Center and via Zoom.

We will discuss recycling issues locally and at the state level, including but not limited to the new proposed recycling center and where are the recycled products sent. Questions and discussion will be part of the program.

Cindy Johnson is the Mayor Pro-Tem on the Alpena Municipal Council. She serves as the chair of the Resource Recovery Facility.

Tuesday

Dominoes

Mexican Train Express is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday at Alpena Community College’s M. Briggs Center. Ready for a fun, addictive and fast-moving game that has lots of surprising twists and turns? Join ALL for Mexican Train Express. This dominoes game does not have partners and can be played with two, three, four, five or more players. You will learn some tricks and techniques. You may join this class any time during the year.

Adult Autism

Debra Brisch will speak to ALL about Autistic Seniors at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Briggs Center and via Zoom.

Understanding autism and how autistic people experience this neurological condition is growing. New science is being revealed which helps us to know more about autism, how it affects individuals on the spectrum, and how it is experienced and how it changes as we develop and mature.

Temple Grandin was one of the first well-known autistic individuals to explain how she experienced autism as a child and how she experiences it today.

Brisch, just a few years younger than Ms. Grandin, was born with autism, but was not diagnosed until late adulthood. She can describe her autistic struggles and strengths from infancy and childhood through her long life until diagnosis finally at age 68. This class will begin with a short discussion about the history and nature of autism as science knows it today.

Brisch was diagnosed with autism three days before her 68th birthday. She writes a blog describing her discovery of her autism, her struggle to get diagnosed at such a late stage of life, and to advocate for late diagnosis for older adults. This blog is required reading for the class.

Wednesday

Pinochle

On Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., join Julie Byrnes and others for single deck pinochle at M. Briggs Center.
