AUGUSTA, Ga. — A star-studded leaderboard and patron-filled course have the 2022 Masters already reaching a fever pitch with Round 2 action underway Friday. Sungjae Im topped the leaderboard after 18 holes but has not separated himself from the pack with his second round near completion. This as the top groups in the afternoon session are hitting Augusta National looking to make a move before the cutline is announced in the early evening.
As one would expect, it’s Tiger Woods who is drawing most of the air out of the atmosphere at Augusta. Playing his first event in 17 months — and just 14 months removed from nearly losing his leg — Woods shot the most remarkable 71 in Masters history to sit T11 and just four shots back of Im. Tiger is not only likely to make the cut barring disaster Friday, he may well be in contention to win his sixth green jacket entering the weekend. Woods is now on the course attempting to do just that. All of it makes for a must-watch second round that should be thrilling from sunrise to sunset on Friday.

Very strong showings now in the books today for Dustin Johnson (+1 in Round 2) and Collin Morikawa (-2 in Round 2). The Ryder Cup buddies playing together did well for themselves on the whole. DJ one off the lead, Morikawa two off it after a slow start on Thursday. Top of the leaderboard looking pretty, pretty good.

You know who’s lurking today? Collin Morikawa. Two-under on the day, 1 under on the week and could easily — EASILY — be at 4 or 5 under today. Really encouraging showing from him nonetheless after a slow start to the week on Thursday.

Tiger’s Round 2 getting ugly
It’s gone from bad to worse for Tiger here in Round 2. He’s 4-over on the day with four bogeys and has bogeyed each of his last three holes at 3, 4 and 5. Some unfortunate breaks, some missed spots but all of it starting to add up. At 3 over with the cut line looming at 4 over, he’s got to turn things around — and quick — if he wants to make the weekend at Augusta National.

Tiger Woods with three birdies in his first four holes to open Round 2. Lone non-bogey hole came on the par-5 second, where he made par. So he’s gone from 1 under and in contention to 2 over and potentially in danger of missing the weekend cut.

Reigning champion Hideki Matsuyama with big start
How about the 2021 Masters champion? Coming into the week dealing with neck and wrist issues, he battled for an even-par opening round and is crushing it early in Round 2 with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 to start the day. Matsuyama one of the best ball-strikers on tour and has the putter working as a nice complement early, too, which was the recipe to how he took home the green jacket a year ago …

Dustin Johnson grinding out impressive round
The former World No. 1 is 1-over on the day and 2-under for the week — so not close to the blistering 20-under he fired when he won a few years ago — but given the conditions I’ve been really impressed with how he’s grinded it out today. Had bogeys on 7 and 9 but came out of Amen Corner unscathed and is even through six on the second nine.

Tiger’s tough start continues
Not a great start to the day for Tiger Woods. Bogeyed No. 1, made par on No. 2 (after finding bunker on both) then bogeyed the third as well after running a good look at par just past the hole.
Putter was his saving grace on Thursday but those mid-rangers on the green are going to have to drop with regularity for him to be in or near the red today. So far not the case, as he drops to 2 over on the day and 1 over on the week.

Nostalgia day here at the 2022 Masters, apparently. Former champion Danny Willett surging up the leaderboard to T1. Former champion Dustin Johnson into the top six. Even Jordan Spieth showing some fight today.
